Rodney King Ready For A New Beating

5
112009

I wish I could tell you the trading card you see below, depicting an infamous and sad day in our history, was not real. It was produced in 2004 by Rittenhouse for their True Crime trading cards and features a drawing of the Los Angeles police officers who beat Rodney King within an inch of his life.

For that brutal and disgusting beating, King walked away with $3.8 million dollars, which he used to open a record company. The money must have run out because in 2008 Rodney took another beating, this time by normal criminals, while riding his bicycle.

Thank goodness for celebrity boxing. Two months ago, Rodney stepped into the ring for his first fight, against a police officer, and walked away the winner. Tomorrow, he will take part in his second celebrity boxing match in a hotel with another former big name on the under card.

Guess who …?

Rodney King, Jose Canseco Ready to Set Foot in Ring Once Again

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jose Canseco is ready to silence one of his critics—the hard way. Meanwhile, Rodney King isn’t turning the other cheek this time.

Former baseball star Canseco, a slugger at the plate, is now a slugger with his fists, and he has another Celebrity Boxing Federation (CBF) match scheduled to prove his mettle.

The iconic King, a symbol of late-20th century civil rights, is scheduled to appear on the same card.

Canseco will take on Pittsfield, MA native Todd Poulton on Friday, November 6 at the Sheraton Springfield Monarch Place Hotel as one of the two headline bouts of Celebrity Boxing 13: David vs. Goliath.

The other headliner match will feature King, who’ll face Derek MacIntosh, a former basketball star-turned actor from Cambridge, MA.

Rodney King is famous for the plea, “Can’t we all just get along?”

Not in the ring on November 6, apparently.

“He’s been yapping about me a lot,” Canseco said of Poulton, who’s a CBF veteran and someone who’s battled OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) most of his adult life. “Well, he’s going to get his chance with me in the ring, but I’m going to make sure he regrets it,” Canseco added, grinning.

The bad blood between Canseco and Poulton was on display once again on Tuesday, October 6, when a press conference was held promoting the fight at the same hotel as where the match will take place.

As for King, he wants to win badly enough that he’s moved from Los Angeles all the way to Broomall, PA so that he may be trained by Pennsylvania boxing legend Marty Feldman.

“If I’m in, I’m in all the way,” King said of his cross-country move to be with Feldman.

In CBF circles, Canseco is perhaps best remembered for going toe-to-toe with actor, radio personality, and Reality TV star Danny Bonaduce earlier in 2009—a match that is still talked about.

“I’m done talking,” Canseco said about the match with Poulton. “Now I’m just waiting for November 6.”

Press Conference in Springfield

By Mike Skurko

Rodney King will be lacing up his boxing gloves in Springfield next week. On Tuesday, the Celebrity Boxing Federation announced his match set for Nov. 6 at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown.

King is known for the beating he suffered by a Los Angeles police officer in 1991, which helped spark the L.A. riots a year later. King, now 44 years old, will face Derrick McIntosh, a Cambridge native who had recurring roles on television's One Tree Hill and Entourage. King said he wants to show how organized fighting in the ring can keep kids from deadly fighting in the streets.

"You can have a nice fight in the ring and just walk away with a handshake, or you can just walk away and still feel better that man is still standing." King said.

The evening's main bout features former baseball star Jose Canseco versus Pittsfield-native Todd Poulton.
